Thoughts on Track E

This year school began for us on August 10, 2009 as we made the conversion to a Track E schedule. While it was difficult to come back so early, we recently had a two week intercession break. What are your thoughts about our new schedule? Do you think a Track E schedule will benefit you? Will it help May Community Academy? Why or why not?

President Obama's Back to School Speech

On September 8, 2009 President Obama addressed the Nation's schoolchildren challenging them to set goals for this year and take responsibility for their learning. Consider responding to one of the following questions:

#1. Who do you feel is ultimately responsible for how well you do in school: your government, your teachers, your parent, yourself? Why?

#2. President Obama stated in his speech, "Every single one of you has something you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer." What are you good at? What do you have to offer May Community Academy?

Planning for Next Year

Students, Parents and Faculty,

The end of the school year is quickly approaching! As this occurs we need to look back at our successes and shortcomings, and look forward to how we can continue to strive to make May Community Academy the best on the west side!

Tell me 1 thing we did well this year that you would like to see stay in place next year.
Tell me 1 thing we can improve upon for next year.

Eighth graders, your opinion matters! We know you'll come back and visit, so be sure to share your insights as well!

Faculty to Crush 8th Graders in Basketball...

Today after school the faculty will take on the 8th grade students in a basketball game at Michele Clark (and will surely put the 8th graders in their place).

Do you like activities like this? Do you think it helps create a positive school atmosphere and helps build relationships between students and teachers?

May Goes Track E!

As you have heard by now, May will be a Track E year round school beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. Technically, students will be in school the same number of school days as every other CPS school. However, on the Track E schedule students will have breaks throughout the school year. School begins August 10, 2009 for students. Students and faculty will have 2 weeks off in October, 3 weeks off at Christmas, and 2 weeks off for Spring Break.

I am excited for this new opportunity and want to share the reasons I think this will work for May.

1. Summer break will be shorter, so there will be less time for students to "lose" knowledge gained throughout the school year.

2. With a shorter summer break teachers will not need to spend as much time "catching up" in September and will have more time to cover new content.

3. There will opportunities to have enrichment programs during the breaks in October, December, and April.

4. Because there are scheduled breaks after 45 days of instruction, teachers and students have a chance to rest and rejuvenate which decreases "burn out".

What are your thoughts about Track E? Do you have concerns? Are you excited?

Let me know!

Mr. Lewis
